THE ROAD AHEAD:
20 Years from TNT to Energy Source
February 22, 2023
Twenty years ago, Tim Blanchard and Ted Carmone had one goal in mind: to provide full turnkey energy efficiency services to their customers. Their goal was to maximize project benefits to the customer by capturing energy savings to reduce the customer’s operational spend, offset project costs using available utility incentives, and ultimately have a positive impact on the environment.
In late 2002, TNT Energy was formed. TNT, a utility contractor, and leading provider of comprehensive energy efficiency solutions served customers throughout Massachusetts and the greater New England area. Blanchard and Carmone built their business model focused on small commercial and industrial customers, an underserved market where they felt they could make the biggest difference, and they continued to grow their company by successfully competing for contracts in multiple programs with the utilities. This growth trajectory resulted in an acquisition by Revolution Lighting Technologies, Inc. in 2016.
Revolution Lighting Technologies, a leader in advanced LED lighting technology solutions, had previously acquired Energy Source at the end of 2015. Energy Source’s primary focus at the time was providing comprehensive turnkey energy efficiency solutions to larger commercial and industrial customers.
After Revolution’s acquisition of both TNT and Energy Source, the two entities joined together in 2016 under the brand of Energy Source – this merging of the two companies created a single, premier, contracted utility vendor and leading provider of comprehensive energy efficiency solutions serving the entire commercial, industrial, and municipal market.
Twenty years later, the current business continues to provide that original “full turnkey, comprehensive” mindset to the same customers that were served individually by TNT and Energy Source.
As the world and its technologies continue to develop and move towards an electric future, Energy Source finds itself continuing to expand into all areas of the industry, including installations of electric vehicle charging and heat pump technology.
“Energy efficiency has come a long way since I began in this industry in 1993” says Tim Blanchard. “Our historical demand side management programs are quickly being transitioned to electrification and decarbonization initiatives.” In the Northeast, “The days of replacing fluorescent lighting and other inefficient electric technologies are gone but this opens another exciting door of greenhouse gas reduction which affords us the opportunity to reach back out to existing customers and offer these exciting programs.”
Blanchard notes that Energy Source is actively growing its team in 2023, including essential technical positions necessary to meet the demand for electrification and a universal goal of net zero by 2050.
“In order for us to keep ahead of this changing landscape we have begun the process of vertically integrating our company to support these efforts. In 2022, we integrated a full-service electric team to better support our end customers and advance our electric vehicle charging station and heat pump installations. We will continue to hire electrical, refrigeration and weatherization technicians to help round out our team.”
